Ephemeral Oud is an oil-based perfume (mukhallat) that plays with a unique idea: it uses some of the most enduring materials in perfumery: oud, florals, resins, and woods, to create something as fleeting as the mist of Iranian rose otto at sunrise.
The scent begins with Shah Gul by resident artisan of AlHind Oud, a Rosa damascena from Kashan picked at dawn, aka Iranian Rose Otto. It smells bright, quietly green, and fresh, much like real rose otto in the cool morning air. Then, a second layer of rose appears, blending a trio of rose absolutes from Bulgaria, Morocco, and Turkey. This trio is darker and more velvety, turning the scent from fresh petals to something like stained silk. Rosewood leaf, Aniba rosaeodora, acts as a diffuser, giving the perfume lift and adding a clean, aromatic, and polished green-linalool shimmer that diffuses the roses without making them overpowering.
The Iranian Rose Otto remains present throughout the fragrance, serving as the luminous thread that anchors the composition. It is powerful, weaving through the heart notes and guiding the fragrant evolution with its persistent, radiant character.
Next, the main reason for this perfume appears: vintage Hindi oud, which is dense, textured, and animalic but not barny. It is supported by Mysore sandalwood, again obtained by ouddict featured artisan, AlHind Oud, with the addition of a vintage 2002 Mysore Sandalwood batch, giving the scent a creamy, meditative feel. Orris butter from Iris pallida, with 20% irone, imparts a cool, powdery, violet-toned elegance. Saffron adds a gentle leather-gold warmth to the heart, without the usual metallic tone. The base features a rich amber accord and Siam benzoin, blending into a glowing, sweet, yet not sticky, resin-skin finish. Finally, a natural vintage deer musk tincture (25%) softens the edges, making the scent feel intimate and close to the skin.
Ephemeral Oud is an exploration of the perfumer’s love of oud, Shah Gul Iranian rose otto, and the ancient art of distillation, as carefully documented by mesOUD. The fragrance feels like a slow-burning relic, with rose vapor over sacred wood. It does not smell like/come across like a typical rose/oud blend.
